“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”
Why did we choose to add Sardinia to our Italy itinerary? We longed to experience the vibrant blue waters we had seen in photos. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed! We chose to stay in Alghero as our base and rented a car so we could venture around to the various beaches. Below we will share a few of our favorite beaches near Alghero, Sardinia during the week.
Approximately 45 minutes North of Alghero, you will find this gem of a beach. We found it much less crowded than some of the other more popular destinations.
As we were driving to it, we felt we were going through an abandoned town that could easily be used as a movie set today! Turns out the town was home to a silver mine that ceased operation in the 1960’s.
The water was a deep blue/green hue and was so clear you could see the rock formations below! We shared the beach with about 15 other people therefore we felt like we were there ourselves. Exactly the setting we pictured when coming to Sardinia!
It wasn’t exactly Spiaggia (beach in Italian) delle Bombarde however it was in the same area. We were following the signs and then saw a few cars pulled off the side of the road and decided to check it out. It was about 25 minutes outside of Algerho. We parked and walked through a bit of forest and down this hill to get there.
Again it was very secluded and we loved just walking through unspoiled nature and then come upon this wonderful beach!
We would highly recommend driving the coast and following one of the many spiaggia signs! You certainly won’t be disappointed and it provides a bit of adventure!
About an hour and 10 minutes North of Algehero, you will find La Pelosa beach. This beach was our FAVORITE during our stay in Sardinia. We visited 2 parts of this beach, the less crowded rocky side as well as the very popular sandy side.
We noticed a rocky side of this beach with far less people than the main part and decided to explore this first. The rock formations surrounded by the deep blue water created a fun oasis for us to take photos, relax and enjoy the refreshing water!
The rock formations behind us made us feel as though we were on another planet! Really interesting backdrop to the clear waters.
After a couple hours here, we decided to walk over to the main part. Why did we want to move? This view was just off to our right!
Had we not seen this with our own eyes, we would think that the photos were doctored up to add this bright color to the water! This shade of turquoise was the bluest water we have ever seen!
We chose to walk along the upper street to get a bit of an elevated look of the beach. I just don’t think this place has a bad angle!
That crowded spot I keep referring to? It’s the only sandy portion amongst all of these rocks. The colorful array of umbrellas against the bright blue waters was quite a sight! Personally? We enjoyed the less crowded rocky side of this beauty!
Despite the crowds, this beach is so stunning it is worth the trip. As soon as you see the bright blue amongst the tree tops, you are in the right place!
*Travel Tip* Most of the beaches we visited had very rocky terrain therefore water shoes are a must. We love our “toe shoes” as they provide a bit of padding for hiking along rough terrain while being light enough that you can seamlessly get in and out of the water without being weighted down. Brian wears Fila’s Skele Toes while I wear Vibram Fivefingers. We would recommend either brand.
Overall the beaches of Sardinia exceeded our expectations! We are still in awe of the natural beauty of these beaches and colorful explosion of blue hues it delivers!
