So it’s no secret that we spend most of our week at work, climbing the corporate ladder. One of the ways that we relax and recharge without having to use a vacation day, is to use a weekend for a night or weekend away. Enter Cell Block Hotel in Clifton, TX which is about 35 miles outside of Waco, Texas.
Clifton is an extremely small town. The history is that this was a functioning jail cell for 40 years. The owners have transformed it into a fun concept for a boutique hotel.
Upon arrival, you will find the key in a lock box. The code will be sent a couple days before you are due to check in. The hotel is located on a back alley so Google Maps does get a bit confused upon arrival!
Let’s take a look inside The Cell Block Hotel!
Upon entering, there is a seating area complete with 2 chairs and a vanity. A night in jail at The Cell Block Hotel includes 2 complimentary beverages – a bottle of red wine and a flask of Texas Whiskey both are found on the vanity!
As soon as we entered, the windows caught our eye. While you can crank them open, they also have big steel doors to close at night for privacy. Really added to the jail element! Not to mention, a fun way to take some photos along the property!
Directly to your right are 2 cells. One a bathroom and the second a bedroom with a queen size bed.
If you look back toward the door, there is a mini-fridge and a record player. There are no TVs in jail so your only entertainment is the record player.
We may or may not have had Johnny Cash on repeat! Full disclosure, we lost count of just how many times we played it. I mean, it’s only fitting during your night in jail!
The property is small but doesn’t feel cramped for 2 people. There are fun elements but overall it’s fairly basic.
Outside there is a stairway that leads to the rooftop.
The rooftop includes loungers and a fire pit. Certainly a feature that can only be used during the cooler months in Texas. We don’t recommend this property in summer as this is a nice area of the cell that you will want to use.
The alley has been spruced up and there is some colorful street art next door.
The main street of town has some shops and restaurants but most of them close by 5pm and are closed on Sundays. We were a bit disappointed in the dining options for the evening. We ended up getting a slice of pizza. If you are looking for a nice meal, you should probably stop on your way to town.
Once the sun started setting, we enjoyed the rooftop for the evening. It was a nice little break and key feature that made for a fun evening.
We brought a bottle of champagne and had our only little rooftop party of the two of us. Once thing is for sure, it’s certainly quiet in this small town. We really didn’t see people during our entire 24 hours there.
Overall it was a fun way to spend a night. We wouldn’t recommend staying longer than 1 day due to the location and lack of things to do in the area.
Overall we’d recommend staying a night in jail at The Cell Block Hotel. It’s a quirky, fun way to spend an evening and get a break!
