“We’re blessed with the opportunity to stand for something – for liberty and freedom and fairness – and these are the things worth fighting for, worth devoting our lives to.”
~Ronald Reagan
We celebrated Memorial Day Weekend which is intended to be a time to remember the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. We decided to travel back to our home-state of Pennsylvania to spend the long weekend with Brian’s family at their cabin along the Allegheny River in Northwestern PA.
Cell service in this area is spotty at best, therefore, we truly were able to disconnect for about 48 hours over the weekend. It was nice! In the afternoon, we biked roughly 15 miles along the “Rails to Trails” bike trail that connects Erie to Pittsburgh.
The section we rode hugged the Allegheny River therefore there were several areas to stop and admire the view.
This is the view of the Allegheny River from the porch on the cabin! It was so peaceful.
Unfortunately the snakes were out in abundance that afternoon. We had 3 snake sightings around the cabin and 3 more out on the trail. I am fine with bugs, spiders and rodents but snakes……I run screaming in the other direction(*To clarify, this is Amanda writing this post!). I am deathly afraid of them so we decided to explore the river. It was time to hit the water on the Mokai (motorized kayak). It was so simple even I was able to take the reigns! It is controlled through a joystick and is like playing an old video arcade game.
No surprise, Brian was frequently seen preparing meals!
Overall it was a nice relaxing weekend spending time with family that we do not get to see very often. We figured it had been over a decade since the family was up there all together. Memorial Day Weekend was a great time to change that. Hopefully it doesn’t take another decade before we do it again!
